%3Cb%3E%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EAID%20OPERATION%20OR%20PROPAGANDA%20DISPLAY%3F%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0APilot%20Gail%20S.%20Halvorsen%20has%20always%20been%20the%20public%20face%20of%20the%201948%2F49%20Berlin%20Airlift.%20Flying%20supply%20runs%20during%20the%20Soviet%20blockade%20of%20West%20Berlin%2C%20he%20would%20throw%20tiny%20parachutes%20carrying%20candy%20out%20of%20the%20plane%2C%20bringing%20joy%20to%20thousands%20of%20children.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20U.S.%20Air%20Force%20mounted%20a%20high-profile%20press%20campaign%2C%20both%20in%20Germany%20and%20back%20home%2C%20to%20promote%20the%20aid%20operation.%20It%20became%20an%20important%20propaganda%20tool%20during%20that%20first%20threatening%20crisis%20of%20the%20Cold%20War.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIn%201974%2C%20Halvorsen%20was%20awarded%20the%20Order%20of%20Merit%20of%20the%20Federal%20Republic%20of%20Germany%20for%20his%20service%20during%20the%20Berlin%20Airlift.%20Until%20his%20death%2C%20he%20regularly%20revisited%20Berlin%2C%20where%20he%20was%20enthusiastically%20welcomed.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThis%20photo%20shows%20him%20at%20the%20Airlift%20anniversary%20celebrations%20in%202019.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ALetter%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AMany%20children%20wrote%20Halvorsen%20thank-you%20notes%20for%20the%20candy%20he%20dropped%20over%20West%20Berlin%20with%20parachutes%20made%20of%20handkerchiefs.%20Eleven-year-old%20Helga%20managed%20to%20get%20hold%20of%20one%20of%20the%20special%20parachutes%20that%20had%20a%20Shmoo%20attached%20to%20it.%20The%20cartoon%20creature%20could%20be%20used%20to%20get%20a%20CARE%20package%20containing%20ten%20pounds%20of%20lard%2C%20which%20was%20a%20welcome%20supplement%20to%20skimpy%20food%20rations.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0APhotographs%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AAbove%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20Air%20Force%20turned%20the%20%E2%80%9Ccandy%20bombers%E2%80%9D%20into%20a%20cottage%20industry%20and%20dubbed%20it%20%E2%80%9COperation%20Little%20Vittles.%E2%80%9D%20Two%20secretaries%20were%20tasked%20with%20answering%20the%20many%20thank-you%20notes%20from%20Berlin%E2%80%99s%20children.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ABottom%20left%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AHalvorsen%E2%80%99s%20superiors%20did%20not%20punish%20him%20for%20throwing%20tiny%20parachutes%20out%20of%20the%20plane%20without%20permission.%20On%20the%20contrary.%20The%20U.S.%20Air%20Force%20embraced%20the%20idea.%20It%20used%20the%20dropping%20of%20sweets%20to%20mount%20a%20large-scale%20press%20campaign%20to%20unite%20the%20citizens%20of%20both%20Germany%20and%20America%20behind%20the%20Allied%20forces.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ABottom%20right%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ABack%20in%20the%20U.S.%2C%20the%20campaign%20caught%20fire.%20Donations%20poured%20in%20from%20civilians%20and%20companies%20like%20chocolate%20manufacturer%20Hershey.%20School%20classes%20collected%20handkerchiefs%20and%20put%20together%20the%20miniature%20parachutes.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AAll%20photographs%3A%20AlliiertenMuseum%20%E2%80%A2%20U.S.%20Air%20Force%20Photo%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%C2%A0
